Work Environment

Flexible schedule with participation in team ceremonies and cross-functional collaboration. Time zone: Europe/Kyiv.

As a qualified expert, You will

  • Solve strategic engineering problems hands on. Explore technologies, build prototypes, and produce reference implementations that make architectural qualities and tradeoffs observable.
  • Design and deliver working software. Architect, implement, test, and maintain services and platform components, including backend systems and architecture-related frontend concerns such as micro-frontend patterns.
  • Automate architectural conformance. Design and implement AI-based architectural conformance checks and fitness functions that continuously evaluate whether systems follow agreed principles, patterns, and quality constraints.
  • Turn ambiguity into an executable approach. Break complex problems into bounded areas, apply domain-driven design, and select a practical course of action when information or precedent is limited.
  • Define measurable quality goals. Establish and continuously evaluate requirements for performance, scalability, reliability, security, availability, recoverability, maintainability, portability, usability, and extensibility.
  • Document architecture evolution. Describe the current state, target state, transition steps, constraints, alternatives, and decisions in forms that engineering teams can use.
  • Make explicit engineering tradeoffs. Provide balanced recommendations on build versus buy, now versus later, and refactor versus rebuild, including cost and operational implications.
  • Create reusable engineering patterns. Develop scaffolding, templates, reference architectures, or platform capabilities that teams can adopt without depending on the Staff Software Engineer long term.
  • Guide delivery teams. Perform architecture and design reviews, coach engineers through difficult decisions, and enable teams to make high-quality choices independently.
  • Communicate for the audience. Explain technical context clearly to engineers, technical leaders, product managers, and business stakeholders, and incorporate useful feedback.

  • Experience implementing agentic applications and tools applying evaluation approaches as part of the process
  • Experience designing RESTful APIs and event driven Kafka-based applications
  • Experience with mainstream relational databases, caching, replication, and search technologies.
  • Experience developing and evaluating agentic applications.
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services with container orchestration technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to lead through technical guidance across multiple teams without formal authority.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with engineers, managers, and product partners.

Senior Full time Remote Backend Node.js TypeScript Miltech Python

About the role

As a Senior Payments Processing Engineer you will join a product team building payment infrastructure for merchants and partner platforms. The platform enables businesses to accept payments, manage payouts, process card and bank transactions, and handle payment-related operations without relying on multiple disconnected providers.

The engineering challenges go far beyond basic payment integrations. The platform handles payment orchestration, transaction processing, settlement and reconciliation, payouts, fraud and KYC integrations, and complex failure scenarios across systems that the team does not fully control.

This role is a strong fit for an engineer who understands how money actually moves through payment systems and is comfortable owning critical backend flows end to end.

Tech Stack

  • TypeScript across the board, in a pnpm monorepo

  • NestJS backend services; Next.js and React on the front end

  • PostgreSQL, with SQL-first data modeling and versioned migrations

  • Event-driven service orchestration, webhooks, and idempotent processing

  • Acquirer and vendor integrations for card/ACH acceptance, fraud screening, payouts, and KYC

  • Managed cloud infrastructure, containerized services, CI/CD on GitHub

  • AI-assisted development as a standard part of the toolchain, not a side experiment

Work environment

Full-time, remote. Daily collaboration with a US-based team (4–6 hours of overlap with US Central Time is required)

As a qualified expert You will

  • Own end-to-end payment flows in TypeScript/NestJS services: authorization, capture, void, refund, dispute handling, and payout initiation and confirmation.

  • Build and maintain acquirer and processor integrations, keeping the platform acquirer-agnostic behind clean internal abstractions.

  • Design embedded and hosted checkout experiences (hosted fields, iframes, tokenization) that keep sensitive cardholder and bank data out of internal systems and minimize PCI scope.

  • Implement fee calculation and rate logic, including tiers, interchange-plus, flat structures, rounding rules, special rates, and edge cases.

  • Build the reconciliation and settlement layer to match processor reports and settlement files against internal records and surface breaks.

  • Design event handling incorporating idempotency keys, out-of-order and duplicate webhooks, retries with backoff, and state machines.

  • Integrate fraud, bank-account verification, and KYC providers, tuning decisioning against real outcomes.

  • Handle ACH mechanics including submission windows, returns, return codes, NOCs, and retry rules.

  • Ensure correctness in the domain, maintaining complete audit trails and producing reconciliation evidence.

  • Act as the team’s payments expert, advising product on rail capabilities and reviewing payment-adjacent code.

What Success Looks Like

  • First 30 days — you can trace any transaction through the platform end to end, and you have documented the gaps and risks you see in current flows.

  • First 90 days — you own a critical payment domain including its specs, tests, and reconciliation checks, and you have shipped a meaningful improvement to reliability or correctness.

  • First 6 months — payment orchestration in your area is provably correct and observable, adding a new processor or payout rail is a well-understood exercise rather than an adventure, and you are the person the team and the business rely on for payments judgment.

We’re looking for you if you have

  • 6+ years building production software , with at least 3 years hands-on in payments , and direct ownership of live payment flows.

  • Concrete experience integrating a payment processor, gateway, or acquirer (Adyen, Stripe, Braintree, Worldpay, Checkout.com, Fiserv, or similar) beyond a starter integration — including webhooks, reporting, and edge-case handling.

  • Practical understanding of the card lifecycle (auth, capture, settlement, refund, chargeback, representment) and of ACH/bank rails (NACHA basics, returns, timing).

  • Working knowledge of PCI DSS obligations and of the architectural patterns that reduce scope: tokenization, hosted fields, iframe isolation, and data-flow segregation.

  • Strong TypeScript/Node.js skills and solid relational data modeling — you can design a schema whose invariants make an inconsistent ledger structurally difficult.

  • A rigorous approach to reconciliation and idempotency, informed by having been on the hook when something didn’t balance.

  • Fluency with modern AI-assisted development tooling, paired with the discipline to verify — in payments, plausible-looking code that is subtly wrong is the expensive kind.

  • Strong English communication skills and confidence working directly with a US-based team.

  • Ability to work with 4–6 hours of daily overlap with US Central Time .

Bonus points

  • Experience with platform, marketplace, or facilitator models (split payments, sub-merchant onboarding, multi-party flows).

  • Experience with payouts and disbursement rails, including bank-account collection, verification, and payout status handling.

  • Experience with fraud and risk tooling, and bank-account validation services.

  • Experience with e-commerce plugin or SDK development (WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento).

  • Knowledge of multi-currency, cross-border, or alternative payment methods.

  • Experience with event sourcing applied to financial state, and double-entry ledger design.
